Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning
5.1 Assess student learning
A part of being able to assess student learning is obtained through close observation. In LIT124, I was able to observe a child in Kindergarten reading a text. From this, evaluative assessments of student learning could be achieved. To view the report of the one on one reading experience click here. The challenges the child faced with the text was a reflection of my own inabilities to scaffold to his needs. I learnt that having broad choices can sometimes result in ineffective teaching practice. In future, I would select a few appropriate texts and have the student chose from them. This still allows a sense of autonomy, but also ensures the content is correctly scaffolded. I also believe that assessment of student learning should include students personal reflections of learning experiences, which is why I have included a reflection of the reading activity I engaged in.
