Volunteer- Literacy groups

Personal Reflection

At Sacred Heart, Cootamundra, I volunteered to help stage 1 students with literacy groups once per week for 18 weeks. This was a fantastic oppourtunity to observe literacy groups and to facilitate the students learning. I enjoyed the various activities. Some of these included: having students create their own silly sentences, sequencing activities, shared and modelled reading, pictorial representation of texts and comprehension based activities. The literacy groups were concluded with quiet reading (Drop Everything And Read- DEAR). I found this to be an effective teaching practice that helped  avoid disruptions when the volunteers (including myself) were leaving the room. I also observed that the classroom teacher was very organised, with the literacy activities in boxes with instructions. As an educator, I believe this set up within the classroom could promote the engagement of parents in their child's learning, while also creating links between the educator, home and also the community.
